My First Tacoma Photo Gang Outing

I finally had some time in my schedule to accompany Kevin on one of the TPG outings here in town. I enjoyed meeting some of the gang veterans  and other new faces, and it was nice to see that initiation basically involved whipping out a camera and taking pictures of things.

The Red Hot

A coordinated blogger effort to meet up together at The Red Hot on its opening day turned out to be quite the success. My impression of the place?

Capers Downtown

For dinner tonight, Kevin and I had the chance to try Capers Downtown on its opening day. It was easy to be persuaded to check it out after reading a couple of reviews, Kevin's pictures, as well as the take out menu he snagged.I was in the mood for some comfort food this evening, and tried their grilled cheese sandwich.

Skimboarding at Dash Point

A couple of weekends ago, I decided to go check out a skimboarding competition that was taking place at Dash Point. I've always been fascinated with the sport, but had never really seen it much in person.

Quick Cascade Bagel Review

In the spirit of impulsive, but informative blog posts, I wanted to share my thoughts on breakfast this morning. This morning, Kevin and I decided to have breakfast at Cascade Bagel and Deli before heading into the office. Kevin decided on an scrambled egg and cheese sandwich on a plain bagel, and he seems to be enjoying it.

Trying Out Coffee & Rhetoric

Tonight, Kevin was asked to be a part of a panel discussion on a new talk show, Coffee and Rhetoric, that recently started up on Thursday nights at Cutter's Point in downtown Tacoma. I had heard about this show, but had not yet had a Thursday free to check it out before tonight.

Overheard Comments and Rant about the WSHM Wall Not-In-Progress

Kevin posted a bit of news today about the Washington State History Museum (WSHM) wall project fiasco, and I thought it'd be a perfectly good time to post some overheard comments I gathered going to and coming from lunch today. Two tourists in front of the fence looking at the unfinished work: "This construction makes no sense. Why are they ruining a perfectly good walkway?

We attended the Goth Annual Tree Lighting last night. Sadly, there was a significant lack of black in decorations or attire.

Today, I found myself heading into work today after finalizing some prep work for the installation of our new tankless water heater. But this entry's not about the water heater.

Identity vs. Legacy

Kevin's been getting some attention lately for his involvement in the discussion surrounding the renaming of Pacific Plaza. It's been an interesting debate on the web, and attending and speaking at last night's city council meeting was a fun little experience.Watch the video from the meeting here (click on "Public Comment" to see us speak.

Sweets, Treats and Designs

Last Friday we went out with friends for some good italian food over at Joeseppi's (review coming soon), and following dinner, we decided to wander over to a nearby shop called Sweets, Treats & Designs. If you're familiar with Joeseppi's you probably know exactly where this is.

Enjoying This Third Thursday

For the past couple of days, I've been held up at my house while trying to get over a bout of allergy/cold symptoms. It always leads to cabin fever, and this time, I remedied it by catching a bus downtown to work today even though I was still far from 100%.

Kevin’s folks came up to spend some time with us today, and to show off their new car. We show our gratitude for their visit by forcing them to walk 10 blocks in the pouring rain, and then making them watch a parade.

News of the News Bringers

In a case of the little fish eating the big fish, McClatchy has decided to buy Knight Ridder in a $6.5 billion deal. Tacoma's News Tribune, which is owned by McClatchy is one of those that may be affected by the deal, although it doesn't seem likely that any McClatchy papers will be sold to pay off the acquisition debt.Having been part of a company that recently acquired a large competitor, I can sympathize with newspaper staff that will likely endure many month of uncertainty, waiting for confirmation of job security while anticipating what, if any, changes will take place in corporate culture. This is a completely different industry than what I am involved in, but I have to say that, on a macro-level, acquisition behavior seems pretty uniform throughout most domestic industries.

Invisible Snow

Last night, the local news began hyping the next "massive winter storm that will most certainly have disastrous effects on the Puget Sound region". It was supposed to come in today, and by the tone of the report, it should've buried everything from Olympia to Everett in at least 10 feet of snow.

Overheard In T-Town #1

"Simon Cowell on American Idol ain't got nuthin' on a woman's critique of herself in a picture." It made me realize that I have never witnessed a woman compliment herself in a picture. Which probably means that not too many prissy, self-absorbed, attention-whores grace me with their presence.
