News is being circulated around the office that this Thursday, June 8th is "Dump the Pump" Day. The American Public Transportation Association is promoting this nationwide to raise awareness about the benefits of public transportation. Facts they're highlighting include:
- Riding a transit bus is 79 times safer than car travel
- In the United States, public transportation saves 855 million gallons of gasoline per year
- These savings are equal to more than twice the energy consumed by the U.S. apparel industry, or half the energy burned by the U.S. paper pulp industry, or by all U.S. manufacturers of computers and electronic equipment.
Normally, Kevin drives me in to work on the way to his office, but I do take the bus from time to time. It's certainly not a bad way to go, and my employer even offers a $15 discount on a monthly bus pass. If it weren't for my sporadic work schedule, I'd probably be even more diligent about taking the bus to work every day. But regardless of my habits, I think it's an awareness effort that's worth supporting, and so Kevin and I will plan on catching a ride on our local transit this Thursday.
