It's the start of a new month and a day after Halloween. Yesterday was my first Halloween at our house, since I was in Detroit last year on business. This year, we were not nearly as enthusiastic about decorating and carving, but we still were able to get some decorations out on the front porch and in the window. We also carved up four small pumpkins (pictured on the right) and bought a few bags of candy.
The turnout was decent this year in terms of trick or treaters. Kevin provided a recap of some of our observations yesterday evening. He did leave out one kid I encountered. I call him the "Candy Yuppie", and he couldn't have been more than 4 years old:
Me: "Happy Halloween! What a great costume!"
Candy Yuppie: "I know. I would like 6 pieces of candy put in my bag."
Me: "Here's a handful for you."
Candy Yuppie: Picks up one of the pieces I dropped in his bag, and examines it. "What IS this?"
Me: "A Jolly Rancher. It's like a lollypop without the stick."
Candy Yuppie: "I see. It's OK, I guess."
And as I closed the door, I felt like I must've just barely met his standards. Maybe Costco candy isn't going to cut it next year if the neighborhood kids all start turning into elitist candy connoisseurs?
Overall, I had a blast handing out candy. We had a decent turnout, including a visit from my friend Jeff and his kids Thorn and Wilonna. And several folks complimented us on our pumpkins. One kid dressed as a nerd even commented on how my "Pi" pumpkin was really cool. That made my night. Unfortunately, I still have about a third of the candy left, so I'm going to have to really focus on my willpower while we find a way to offload our stash on our friends. (that's what they're for, right?)
