On November 1, 2006, I started a Netflix membership. Most might think, "Wow, are you trying to be the last person to hop on this bandwagon?"
As a matter of fact, no. No, I'm not. The hindrance of this has been, quite frankly, entirely someone else's fault. But after realizing that I can count the times I've been to a theater this year on one hand, and thinking about how infrequently we rent movies, I realized we were becoming very close to being completely out of touch with mainstream society. It's bad enough we choose not to have cable.
So, I signed up. While he wasn't around to stop me. That'll learn 'um not to let me out of the cellar unsupervised.
As I was creating my Netflix queue, I realized I had a bit of a dilemma in deciding how to use this service, and not feel like I'm making it harder for our local DVD rental shop. I wound up deciding to get the lowest plan: 2 rentals a month. This way, I'd put all the movies I'd like to see eventually on this list. That leaves 2 weekends where we may decide to pop into the local shop to pick up a rental we're actually excited about seeing. We'll see how it goes.
Yesterday, our first movie came: Thank You For Smoking. We watched it last night and I liked it. I found it funny, witty and surprisingly realistic in how it portrayed information being managed and manipulated in mainstream media. And no, it doesn't make you want to smoke.
